Guest performance of the Miskolc Ballet
Choreographer-director: Noémi Kulcsár
The carefree, dizzying rhythms of the twenties, smoky jazz and resonant, scratchy swing, life raging in a daze in the lamp-lit night, and the desire to put off the morning as long as possible...
The performance of the Miskolc Ballet is an adaptation of the 1925 novel of the famous American writer F. Scott Fitzgerald, The Great Gatsby. The story is set in America in the twenties, on the east coast of the US where the members of high society celebrate their immeasurable wealth in seaside mansions and at opulent soirées. Jay Gatsby is one of them: handsome, mysterious and filthy rich. But soon it turns out that Gatsby is not who he first appears, and that his interest in Daisy Buchanan, a well-known, married beauty is more than just simple desire. As the secrets of Gatsby’s past are successively revealed and increasingly a huge scandal is threatening, we are faced with the fact that wealth is not all – for what a man truly needs, cannot be bought.
The Great Gatsby is about money and a fanatic pursuit of power, as well as a captivating love that spans over years and continents. Since its release, the novel has been made into film several times, most recently in 2013 with Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan in the lead roles. This time the dancers of the Miskolc Ballet adapt one of the most important novels of American fiction to the stage.
